I want to talk about a journey I took to the Verdant Coast about two years ago. I went with two close friends on a cheap overnight bus, mainly because we wanted an adventure and didn’t have much money. I still remember the moment the bus left the city — the lights went out and you could smell the sea for the first time. Halfway through the trip the engine died and we were stuck near a tiny riverside village. At first we were annoyed, but soon the locals came out and offered us tea and a place to wait in the community hall. The highlight of the trip was the impromptu festival they were having: folk music, dancing and very simple, delicious food. It took us by surprise how quickly we felt welcome. My friend and I struck up a conversation with an elderly woman who told us stories about the area and its traditions; those chats really brought the place to life. There was a real sense of warmth in the hall. By the time the bus was fixed we had new friends, new songs stuck in our heads and a different view of that part of the country. What made the journey memorable wasn’t the destination itself but the unexpected kindness and the conversations that made us slow down and notice small things. I often think back to that night when I want a reminder that travel can be about people more than places.
